Beta - Secretase Inhibitor 2, also called BACE1 (β-site of APP cleaving enzyme) or memapsin-2, is a amyloid precursor protein (APP) b-secretase from human brain cleaves full-length APP at the amino terminus of the amyloid b-protein (Ab) sequence, thus leading to the generation and extracellular release of b-cleaved soluble APP and a corresponding cell-associated carboxy-terminal fragment. The subsequent cleavage of the C-terminal fragment by g-secretase(s) leads to the formation of Ab. This new peptide represents a potent substrate analog inhibitor of APP b-secretase with IC50 = 30 nM.
C-terminus is amidated.
